Aug. 29, 1987

Let me see what I can remember to write, since it has been so long (without an entry). I have written about "Chuck" before... he got married about 2 or 3 days after his 20th. birthday... his wife, Teri Goley, is just as sweet and nice as can be. He couldn't have done any better. She is not a member of the Church but would come if "Chuck" would... he has only been (to church with us) a few times since he got married. They come over just about every week end for a little while. They bought a trailer and live in Gastonia. They both work and don't seem to be afraid of it. I don't want to give up on him... in getting him back to Church. He is a good boy always willing to help a neighbor or Church member who is in need. He still obeys the Word of Wisdom and is a good boy (Young Man). He just doesn't want to come to Church on Sunday. Maybe as he gets older & more mature that will change. They are doing very well and seem to have a good life.

John - John is a good boy! He got his Eagle in Boy Scouts of America... building Blue Bird houses for the park was what he chose to do for his Eagle Scout Project. He graduated from high school in June and went to BYU for the summer. He came home for a couple of weeks and has gone back again. He is planning to go on a mission in April. Before he left for the summer he bore his testimony in church and said. "When I think of a Perfect Mother, I think of my own!" That sure made me feel good and proud... and that was enough to keep me crying all afternoon. He got his summer grades yesterday (B+, B- & C). He seems to be enjoying himself out there. He was the Finance Clerk in his Ward over the summer and is working with Reach Out America where he helps match students with older people (Adopt a Grandparent) and he likes that a lot. Some friends & members of our Ward (the Patrick family) were in a serious accident (the father, John and a son, Brian were killed) on their way back from Utah. Part of the family are still in the hospital... John went to see some of them on Wednesday when he went back to school. He starts classes next Monday... I sure hated to see him go. My family is getting smaller and smaller and it is hard to give them up. While John was home he went to the Atlanta Temple with other youth (about 27 all together) from our Ward / Stake to do Baptisms for the Dead... they are all real special kids. The Patricks' funeral was in Utah and my Johnny said he got up at 5 O'clock in the morning in order to make it... and got there much too early. Our Stake President Larson went out to do the funeral... when he saw John in the congregation... "he just took John under his wing and took care of him and saw that he had a ride back to school instead of having to walk it." How could you help but be proud of a son like that?

Donna - Donna is so beautiful and has a personality to match. Se is kind to everyone and has compassion for them. she is 17 but doesn't have many boy friends... it isn't because she isn't asked - she gets calls and offers all the time, but she said she is only going to date members of the Church & just not bother to go out with anyone else. She received the most beautiful Patriarchal Blessing that I have ever read... she is certainly a special Young Woman. The Patriarch who gave her blessing came up to her about a month after the blessing and told her that he had never felt such a strong spirit as she has. She does really well in school and was inducted into the National Honor Society last year... a real surprise for her. Donna took a Sign Language Class at Church and is an interpreter for the deaf (we have 2 deaf teen agers at Church and she is really friendly & helpful to them).

Daniela - Danni has looked in this book several times to see what I have written about her, so here goes Danni: Danni has a good mind. She is probably the most intelligent of all our children. She works hard in all her classes and does well, but I think her greatest asset is her writing... she could be an author some day if she put her mind to it. She won a ribbon every grading period last year for being on the honor roll. We are really proud of her!
